Common-Rail System Diagnosis

In 1998 a major breakthrough in diesel technology occurred, radically changing the way in which diesel engines are injected with fuel using electronic control. This system, called Common-Rail, has further raised the efficiency of diesel engine power sources on passenger cars and CV applications.

The aim of this course is to introduce automotive technicians to the Common-Rail concepts and provide information regarding system diagnosis and safety procedures. Pump systems and control as well as the piezo controlled injection principle are amongst the various topics covered on this course. The trainee will gain valuable in-depth knowledge of fault diagnosis procedures relating to this system using the latest tools designed for CR repair. Use will be made of specialised diesel test equipment and oscilloscopes to provide visual interpretation and analysis of the system.

Completion of courses VSE1, VSTD9, VSG5 and VSD12 is a prerequisite to attending VSD15. Course VSD12 in particular provides the necessary background knowledge on diesel theory, sensors and actuators. Delegates must be familiar with typical oscilloscope and diagnostic tester operation and should have attended the appropriate equipment operator’s courses.

The course is divided into linked modules, which allow the essential underpinning theory and practical skills knowledge to be delivered effectively.

  • Operational modes and unique functions
  • System testing and diagnosis

On successful completion of VSD15 delegates will be able to:

  • Evaluate service information to identify the test procedures for the systems.
  • Identify and state the function of sensors, components and actuators relating to Common-Rail systems as well as diagnosing system running faults.
